The Westport Downtown Merchants Association invites you to their annual spring community event, ART ABOUT TOWN, May 24-June 17, 2012.

ART ABOUT TOWN brings original, affordable and obtainable artwork to shop and restaurant windows, turning the vibrant Westport shopping district into one continuous gallery to stroll along and enjoy. All works are juried by local experts and will be for sale.

ART ABOUT TOWN begins with a festive Opening Night Celebration on Thursday May 24th from 5:30 pm-8:30 pm. That night, Main Street will be traffic-free and filled with music, street performers, art demonstrations and refreshments. Participating businesses will stay open late and will have some surprises in store as well.

"Mr. Sendak’s characters, by contrast, are headstrong, bossy, even obnoxious.

(In “Pierre,” “I don’t care!” is the response of the small eponymous hero to absolutely everything.) His pictures are often unsettling. His plots are fraught with rupture: children are kidnapped, parents disappear, a dog lights out from her comfortable home."

Panorama at CCP: The Annual Members' Exhibition

Opening reception: Sunday, April 1, 2 – 5 pm, admission free

Dynamic panoramas, artwork in an extremely wide horizontal format, evocative of widescreen TV, computer, and movie screens. On view are over 80 original, handmade prints by the artist/printmakers who are members of CCP.

I always wanted to do a print on a brown paper bag, and when I realized that the width of an unfolded shopping bag perfectly matched the maximum dimension allowed for this show I decided to go for it! Here's my computer model based on a portrait of the playwright Leslye Headland with the logo of seven crows representing her play series The Seven Deadly Plays:

WHAT IS MONOTHON2011?
The CCP 13th annual marathon of monotype printing starts with printing sessions, an opportunity for artists to work with master printers in art-intensive, five-hour sessions to create original monotypes. This year, Artists' Printing Sessions were held from October 16 through 22, a Youth Monothon took place October 23, and printing sessions ended with the Outreach Monothon for Briggs High School students on October 24.

WHAT IS A MONOTYPE?
Monotype prints are made by drawing or painting with ink directly onto a printing plate. The plate is placed in contact with paper and run through a printing press, producing a one-of-a-kind print.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PRINTING SESSION?
Each MONOTHON artist is assisted by a Master Printer and a Press Assistant. All materials are provided; artists may create up to ten prints during each session.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PRINTING SESSION?
At the end of each session, one print from each artist is selected for exhibition and sale at the MONOTHON2011 Auction and Party, the celebration that is the culmination of the monotype marathon. The artist retains her/his remaining prints. Prints chosen for exhibition and sale become the property of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. All proceeds from MONOTHON2011 (printing sessions and auction) support CCP’s programs and activities. The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is a nonprofit workshop and gallery recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) (3) organization.

The CCP mission is to support, preserve, and advance the art of original prints.

ART TO THE AVENUE 2011 – A FOURTEEN YEAR TRADITION

Art to the Avenue, the Greenwich Arts Council’s annual spring celebration,

turns downtown Greenwich into a strolling art gallery

that brings works of art to store windows throughout the month of May.
